In a tribute posted on social media, Profound Lore Records founder Chris Bruni shared a quote from Ernest Hemingway’s A Farewell to Arms: “The world breaks everyone, and afterward, some are strong at the broken places.” Bruni added, “REST IN POWER Erik Wunder of Cobalt/Man’s Gin… you goddamn outlaw. Meanwhile, Cobalt signed to Profound Lore Records and released two more albums: 2006’s Eater of Birds and 2009’s Ernest Hemingway–inspired Gin, the latter of which dovetailed with Kamerzell’s departure from Man’s Gin. In a Pitchfork interview with Wunder around the time of its release, Grayson Haver Currin wrote that the band had created “blackened metal that felt more dangerous than the work of so many satan-worshipping acts steeped in fantasy and make-believe.”
