Closure date announced for one of Australia’s largest copper mines


In 2023, it announced its intention to close Mount Isa Copper Operations (MICO) and the copper concentrator, saying the underground copper mine — already Australia's deepest — was no longer "economically viable". Glencore has also confirmed the future of the copper smelter in Mount Isa and the copper refinery in Townsville are under review, with an "unprecedented decline in the global smelting market". Mr Strohmayr said the Mount Isa copper smelter was one of two left in the country, and the only one that could process product from overseas, making it vital to national security.
