Central Asia Looks West as It Rewires Its Energy System


The program will support hydropower in the Kyrgyz Republic and Tajikistan, thermal power in Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan, and the growing solar and wind potential across all Central Asia countries. Through its 10-year span, the program aims to increase Central Asia’s electricity trade to at least 15,000 GWh annually – enough to meet the yearly needs of millions of people across Central Asia, while more than tripling transmission capacity to 16 GW and enabling up to 9 GW of clean energy resources. Last year, the EU and Central Asia elevated their cooperation to a strategic partnership, with the EU committing a $14-billion (12 billion euros) Global Gateway investment package to strengthen Central Asia-Europe transport links and deepen cooperation on critical raw materials, digital connectivity, water, and energy.
