The political pageantry and flurry of meetings will reveal quite a lot about where the region is heading, and the way it is shaping (and being shaped by) some of the massive strategic and economic disruptions reverberating around the globe. At the top of that list, as ever, lies climate change — and the Pacific's race to access the resources and funding it needs to try to adapt to the chaos it is already starting to bring. But it's likely the final declaration will be broad enough for all players to draw what they like from the text: an earlier draft of the Ocean of Peace declaration seen by the ABC calls on outside players to engage with the Pacific in a way that "supports national and Pacific-led approaches" — a formulation wide enough to drive a bus through.
