The AFP earlier said officers began investigating the South Australian man after receiving a referral from the Department of Defence that he had worked for a foreign military without authorisation. While it was not an offence for an Australian to join the armed forces of a foreign country, the AFP said "defence legislation regulates the work certain individuals can perform for a foreign military, government or company without authorisation". "It's a very unusual case — as I understand it, it's the first case that the Commonwealth have prosecuted in the whole of Australia so it'll be interesting to see what the elements are," he said.
