The same story has been told non-stop in New York for over a decade: a 30-year-old utility infielder, with just 0.7 WAR in over 300 games with the Mets, signs as a free agent with the Dodgers and suddenly hits .340 to become one of the best bats in baseball. The 19th overall pick in the 2020 Draft and the headline prospect the Mets parted with in their long-lamented trade for Javier Báez, Crow-Armstrong has become a sort of cautionary specter in Queens. Since then, he’s found flashes of success with the Rangers in 2019 and the World Series champion Astros in 2022 — most notably posting a 2.37 ERA while logging the most innings of any reliever for the latter team.
