That's one of the pressing questions asked by British Tamil artist Christopher Kulendran Thomas in his video installation The Finesse, one of the works featured in Data Dreams: Art and AI at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) in Sydney. "That trial was this seminal moment … where people around the world could see that these institutions that you have to believe in to stay sane [in a democracy] … like the justice system and the idea of equality before the law and that you're innocent until proven guilty … could be shaped by narrative, by storytelling." "But there's also a great deal of work where artists are interrogating the technology, but [also] engaging with it as a collaborator, using it like a philosophical laboratory, an experimental space where they can create work that is questioning what it means to [make art], but also what it means to live on the planet, what it means to engage with a different kind of intelligence."
