Wild horses gallop along the beach of this barrier island state park where visitors can board or body surf the Atlantic, paddle the tranquil bay, or fall asleep to the sound of waves at the oceanside campground. Many of the iconic attractions—like the Maid of the Mist boat ride and Cave of the Winds experience—are part of the park. The park’s name honors both the Scandinavians who settled in this remote corner of the Northern Prairies in the late 19th century, and the landscape of woods and water formed by the glacial ice that once covered the region.
