45 years ago, around the time that The Empire Strikes Back was unleashed upon the world – widely considered to be one of the greatest movie sequels ever made – the late Irvin Kershner was interviewed by Alan Arnold for Once Upon a Galaxy: A Journal of the Making of The Empire Strikes Back. Famously, when George Lucas first created Star Wars, the conflict between the Empire and the Rebel Alliance was inspired by the Vietnam War – the Rebels represented the Viet Cong – but that conflict was brutal, politically complex, and terrifyingly close to home. Then there was Star Wars, which provided a clear divide between right and wrong: the Jedi and the Rebels were the good guys, and the Empire and Darth Vader were the bad.
