Evangelion is a story about the depths of depression and the psychological trauma of living in a world on the brink of collapse. In the real world, young adults are frequently told that they're the future and that responsibility for saving the planet is on their shoulders, but the psychological effects of that burden are made abundantly clear in Evangelion. Yuasa is one of the most distinctive directors working in anime, and his take on sports with Ping Pong is still one of the best sports anime of all time.
