In war movies, a filmmaker takes viewers behind the lines of everything from the Civil War and Vietnam War to the two World Wars, and in some cases, American battles in the Old West. The entire movie is a tense story that alternates between the thrill of battle and the suspense of the hunt, while focusing on the men on the boat and their desire to just do the best they can for their country. Petersen succeeds in delivering a story that shows what war is really about, as it isn't about the big goals, but about the men on the field, in the subs, and in the battles who were sent and forced to fight for their country, regardless of any other motivation.
