However, Gene Siskel saw the merits of the movie from the beginning and called the uncut version of Once Upon a Time in America the best film of the year, while admitting the studio version was the worst of 1984. Siskel called it the best film of 1985 and ranked it among the greatest cinematic achievements of all time, as it highlighted the horrors of World War II as no movie before it had. As a story that is as much about the battle inside the man as it is about the fights in the ring, it is no surprise Siskel appreciated the greatness of Raging Bull.
